Complementary therapies day

Location:  Victoria Room, 4th Floor, Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, 210 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne

Many people who have been diagnosed with cancer use complementary therapies as well as their mainstream medical treatment, usually for the management of symptoms and side effects of treatment and to improve quality of life.  We will hear from a range of complementary practitioners who are experienced in working with cancer patients. Come along to all or part of the day to learn about the effectiveness and benefits of different therapies, and where to find out more.  The day will be made up of information sessions including time for questions, as well as experiential sessions where you can try out some therapies.


9.45am to 10.15am Registration and welcome

10.15am – 11am Mindfulness Mini Workshop  Suzanne Peyton,  The Mindful Well

11.15am – 12pm Naturopathy  Sandra Villella, Naturopath and Herbalist in private practice and Jean Hailes for Women’s Health

12pm – 1.20pm Try it out!  Short sessions of:

  • Tai Chi
  • Hand Reflexology
  • Reiki

1.20pm – 2pm Traditional Chinese Medicine (including Acupuncture and Herbal medicine) Vlado Krstevski, Westgarth Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre

2pm – 2.35pm Exercise Judy Sammut, Exercise Instructor, Pioneer of Cancer & Exercise programs. Judy has experienced cancer herself.

2.45pm – 3.25 pm Yoga Swami Karunananda, Doncaster Meditation and Yoga

3.30pm – 4.15pm Diet and Cancer Maree Brinkman, Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Nutrition Biomed

The day is free however registration is essential.

Many women use complementary therapies alongside their conventional treatments to help manage physical and emotional effects of their cancer and treatment. It is important to let your treating team know if you are thinking about using complementary therapies, as they may affect your treatment.
