Sleep and cancer

Many people with cancer have sleep problems, such as:

  • difficulty falling asleep
  • difficulty staying asleep
  • waking very early
  • sleep that doesn’t feel refreshing.

Not sleeping well can lead to problems with fatigue, low mood, poor concentration, difficulty thinking clearly and generally feeling unwell.

The good news is that there are many things we can do to improve sleep, and our presenter, Dr Oliver Holmes will talk about these. Oliver is a psychologist from Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and he’s involved in the Hospital’s ‘Can-Sleep’ service. This service focuses on cognitive and behavioural methods of improving sleep. These methods are as helpful as medications in the short term, and better than medications in the longer term.
